Touring the Oldest Windmill along the Kinderdijk, Netherlands

Our river cruise last fall began with a walking tour of Amsterdam. The second day we took a vintage barge to see and tour the oldest windmill along the Kinderdijk. The day was beautiful and the reflections of the sky and surroundings in the water were amazing! It doesn’t get any better for me than to cruise on a boat on the canals of Holland.

This windmill, along with the others, was used to pump sea water off of the land and worked in a very different way than the others. The windmill keepers had very comfortable living quarters inside, plus a separate summer kitchen to reduce the chances of fire destroying the windmill. The keeper of the windmill showed us how he unfurls and ties up the sails. It was a fascinating tour.
